As a child I had a series of books about Maui from New Zealand. He is a mythical character who is at the heart of many legends. The books were illustrated with these very powerful and colourful images. I saw these books as part of my spiritual upbringing. One particular story is about Maui going to speak to the witch in a mountain to get fire as there was no more fire in the village. The woman was reluctant but gave him 1 flame from her 10 (1 for each finger), but every time he took was on his way to the tribe, it would get put out by a variety of creatures and mishaps. One of the times he lost a flame as he was crossing a river. A giant Taniwha (water goddess) stepped on it. It was a fascinating creature, which one day appeared in my painting.
